Plasticized or semi-rigid PVC, with a high-molecular weight, is used to manufacture blood bags and tubing, because of its excellent mechanical properties. The other main advantage is that it has a very low tendency towards the formation of fish-eyes and having good properties. Added advantages are its high-purity content and chemical resistance, and the fact that all the additives used in the final production processes are in conformity with all the main pharmacopoeia.
Blood bags are manufactured by a process known as calendering or blow casing. Extrusion is used to manufacture the PVC used in the production of medical tubing.
